Several people were injured by gunfire in central Paris.
A man in his 60s was arrested, the newspaper Le Parisien reported, citing police circles.
"There were seven or eight shots, there is panic," said an eyewitness to the AFP news agency.
The police called for people to avoid the area around Rue d'Enghien in the 10th arrondissement.
The number of victims and the backgrounds were initially unclear.
It is a small street with many restaurants, not far from the Grande Boulevards with their famous department stores.
The fire brigade and rescue workers were on duty.
