A 27-year-old man was charged on Thursday with participation in the preparation of a terrorist act and possession of an explosive after being arrested last Friday after a suspicious package was discovered in the grounds of a hospital in the city of Leeds, according to police.

The suspect had been arrested in the early morning after this discovery at Saint James's Hospital in the city in north-east England, leading to the establishment of a security device.

'An isolated incident'

He is due to appear in court at a video-conference hearing on Friday at Westminster Magistrates Court.

Under British law, his indictment limits the details that can be made public of the charges against him.

The investigations

"confirmed our initial assessment that this is an isolated incident,"

James Dunkerley, head of counter-terrorism policing in the North East, said in a statement.

There is no indication that there is an

"increased risk"

to the public, he added.

The suspect was charged with participation in the preparation of a terrorist act, possession of an imitation firearm and possession of explosives with the intention of endangering human life or property.
