Pushed out but not yet retired: the great dismay of seniors

SURVEY - Often considered too expensive, less flexible, uncreative, older profiles struggle to find their place in a job market that neglects them.

When the sociologist Serge Guérin asks his students to

“draw a senior employee”,

he recovers sketches of

“characters leaning on a cane, even in a wheelchair”

.

When he offers them to

“draw an experienced employee”

, he gets

“people sitting at a desk, surrounded by books and files”

“However, a senior employee is above all an experienced employee!

, points out this specialist in issues related to aging (1).

Why are there so many people who are tired of work, in France more than elsewhere?

It also comes from the feeling of not being recognized, of being just a number.

Changing the representations of seniors and promoting their employment should be a prerequisite for pension reform.

According to the 2022 edition of the Barometer of perception of equal opportunities in business by the Mouvement des entreprises de France, age is by far the most feared discrimination: 43% of employees fear being a victim of it one day.
