A coal mine collapsed in northern China.

According to state media, at least two people died in the mine accident and more than 50 workers are missing.

Six other people were injured, state broadcaster CCTV reported.

"A number of employees and vehicles" were buried in the accident at the Xinjing Coal Mining Company's open-pit mine in Alxa County, CCTV reported.

The operating company left several inquiries from the AFP news agency unanswered about the incident.

Again and again serious accidents

Chinese President Xi Jinping called for "comprehensive efforts to search and rescue the missing and treat the injured," according to the Xinhua news agency.

Xi called for "ensuring the safety of people's lives and property and maintaining overall social stability."

In China there are always serious accidents in mines with many fatalities.

This is often due to inadequate security measures.
