Music at Malmaison: the return of the spirit of Josephine

4/10/2023, 3:46:55 PM

The Empress and her children were avid music lovers and seasoned musicians. A tradition with which the former residence, which has become a museum-château, dreams of reviving.

Some 23 volumes of scores preserved in Malmaison partially attest to the musical activity of the place.

A fortnight bears the binding of the estate with the cipher of the Empress.

"The great tunes of Spontini, Méhul or Jadin rub shoulders with the masters of the harp of the time

," explains Élisabeth Caude.

It is to revive this repertoire, which largely remains to be rediscovered, and to give a voice to Malmaison, that she has decided to launch a season of concerts on instruments from Josephine's time.

Started last month in partnership with the association La Nouvelle Athènes - which has a square Érard 1806 piano close to that of Queen Hortense and magnificently restored (the instruments of Malmaison are not currently playable), this one will culminate at Pentecost, in the form of a festival of seven concerts which will bring together the fine flower of interpretation on romantic instruments: from Olga Pashchenko to Arnaud Marzorati
