Four works returned last March to the dealer's heirs will be auctioned on May 16 at Sotheby's in New York. As a key piece, a canvas by Gauguin which is causing debate.

Such is the fate of the four works from the Ambroise Vollard collection which cost the State ten years of proceedings, before being returned, by decision of the Paris administrative court on February 10, 2023, to the heirs of the famous art dealer. .

On March 17, the decision became effective.

It ends with a sale on May 16, at Sotheby's, during the week of the great dispersions of modern art in New York.

The house of businessman Patrick Drahi, who had carried out a discreet evaluation of the works in 2015, was in the front row to win the case.

Put in competition, however, it is assumed that it had to offer the best financial conditions.

It also had the advantage of having dispersed in 2010 a set of 140 works by Vollard found in 1979 in the safe of the Société Générale in Paris.
