Nomisma, growing surfaces with organic wine production

Highlights: With 126 thousand hectares of vines cultivated organically in 2021, Italy holds the record for the incidence of organic vineyard area. Within a decade - between 2010 and 2020 - organic surfaces in Italy grew by 141% against +148% in Spain and +218% in France. Germany is the main destination market for our organic wine (67% of companies indicate it as the first reference market), followed by the Scandinavian countries (61%) Outside the EU borders, Switzerland, the United States and the United Kingdom dominate, followed by Canada and Japan.

BOLOGNA - In Italy, the areas dedicated to the production of organic wine are growing, a sector that sees the country among the main players at international level. This is what emerges from 'Vinobio', an online data and information platform for the internationalization of organic wine 'Made in Italy curated by Nomisma and promoted by ICE Agency and FederBio. In detail, with 126 thousand hectares of vines cultivated organically in 2021, Italy holds the record for the incidence of organic vineyard area, equal to 21% of the total. Within a decade - between 2010 and 2020 - organic surfaces in Italy grew by 141% against +148% in Spain and +218% in France.

The role of Italian organic wine on international markets is also significant: according to Nomisma's estimates, the value of exports in 626 amounts to 2021 million (+18% compared to 2021) and a weight on total Italian wine exports (organic + conventional) equal to 8%.

As for the markets covered, from the latest survey conducted by Nomisma for ICE Agency and FederBio on 110 Italian wineries, Germany is the main destination market for our organic wine (67% of companies indicate it as the first reference market), followed by the Scandinavian countries (61%). Outside the EU borders, on the other hand, Switzerland, the United States and the United Kingdom dominate, followed by Canada and Japan.

In the last three months, in particular, Nomisma has conducted two surveys on Swedish and Japanese consumers: in the Scandinavian country, according to the numbers collected, Italy is the absolute leader with a weight on total sales of organic wine of 42% both in value and volume while in Japan the figure stands at 10%. However, Italy is in second place, behind France, among the producers of the highest quality wine in the opinion of Japanese consumers.
