A 15-year-old Berlin teenager who was seriously injured by a player from French club Metz during a fight after an international tournament in Frankfurt has died, German police announced Wednesday.

"After Sunday's fight ... The 15-year-old boy has died in hospital from serious brain injuries," German police said in a statement. The 16-year-old boy suspected of fatally beating him remains in custody, Frankfurt police said, and they are continuing their investigation.

The suspect is part of one of Metz's training programs, which plays in the second division. "In order to clarify the circumstances of (the death of the young German), an autopsy will be carried out in the coming days," he added. The deceased teenager, who is part of the German team JFC Berlin, had been kept alive artificially so that he could donate his organs, Frankfurt prosecutor's office spokeswoman Nadja Niesen told AFP. The tournament in which both young people participated hosted teams from 16 different countries, most of them European.
