Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson quit parliament on Friday in protest against MPs investigating his conduct, reopening divisions within the ruling Conservative Party ahead of next year's national election.

Johnson is fighting for his political future in the face of a parliamentary inquiry into whether he misled lawmakers by stating that his government had adhered to all restrictions during the coronavirus pandemic, despite parties being held at government buildings while the public was under lockdown.

Johnson said he was resigning because it was "clear" that the committee was "determined to use the proceedings against me to expel me from Parliament". He also attacked current Prime Minister Rishi Sunak for his performance in power. He clarified that he did not lie during his statements to parliament.
