MK Orna Barbivai (Yesh Atid) is expected to announce her candidacy for mayor of Tel Aviv-Yafo tomorrow (Wednesday). Yesh Atid activists received an invitation to an event to be held tomorrow evening in Gan Ha'ir where Barbivai, a major general in the reserves and former economy minister, will officially announce the launch of the mayoral race against incumbent Mayor Ron Huldai.
Barbivai, who was the first female champion in the IDF, joined Yesh Atid in 2019 and has served as a member of Knesset since the 21st Knesset. In the Bennett-Lapid government, she served as economy minister. Barbivai will be the only Knesset member from Yesh Atid to run in the municipal elections and is expected to resign from her Knesset position during the summer recess in order to concentrate on running, at the request of party chairman Yair Lapid. MK Elazar Stern also considered running for mayor of Haifa but decided to give up in light of the demand to resign from the Knesset.
