U.S. President Joe Biden began using a breathing apparatus during his sleep to treat breathing problems, White House officials said Wednesday.

"Since 2008, the president has disclosed in medical reports his history of sleep apnea. He used a CPAP machine last night, which is common among people with such backgrounds," said Andrew Bates, a White House spokesman. Another White House official said Biden had begun using the machine in recent weeks to improve his sleep quality.

Reporters noticed marks on Biden's face throughout the day indicating that he was wearing a kind of wide strap.

The Democratic president's doctor, who plans to run for re-election next year, declared him fit for office in February after a medical examination.
