The incident took place in the Mari-El Republic in the eastern European part of Russia. According to authorities, a group of hikers set up camp on the banks of Lake Yalchik, apparently yesterday.

But last night a hurricane hit the area, and winds, reaching speeds of 27 meters per second, toppled more than 500 trees along the way. Some of the trees fell on the tent camp that opened on an undeclared beach and on their cars. In addition to the fatalities, 27 were wounded. In total, more than 100 vacationers stayed in the camp.

Along with the seven travelers, at least two other people were killed in similar circumstances across the federal province of Privelzhye (where the ethnic republic of Marie-El is located).
