Before departing for the United States earlier this week, Netanyahu claimed that the demonstrators were joining "the PLO and Iran."

A few hours later, and amid the uproar, the Prime Minister's Office issued a statement: "When the prime minister used the word 'friends,' he meant the fact that while the prime minister of Israel represented the State of Israel on the UN stage, supporters of the PLO and BDS – Israeli citizens – would demonstrate at the same time, something that had never happened before. Hopefully, the Israeli demonstrators will take at least a few minutes to demonstrate against them as well, but they deny the right of the State of Israel to exist."
