Beyond Israel and Palestine, the surprise and unprecedented attack on Israel by the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas will have important regional consequences. The reconfiguration of the Middle East envisaged by some with the rapprochement between the Jewish state and Saudi Arabia in sight has probably taken a hit by bringing to the fore the lack of a solution to the nagging Palestinian question. Tehran and its main ally Hezbollah in Lebanon, as well as Riyadh and Abu Dhabi – which has normalized its relationship with Israel – are closely watching developments between the Palestinian Islamists of Hamas and Israel.
