European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen unambiguously denounced Hamas' "act of war" and "terrorism." She reaffirmed Israel's right to defend itself and assured that Europe would stand by it "in this tragedy". Many Europeans are now calling for a change in the bloc's Palestinian policy, whose subsidies have indirectly financed Hamas, just as gas purchases from Russia had financed the war in Ukraine for several years.
