The assailant was eventually shot dead by law enforcement. A Palestinian man was killed Monday after stabbing and wounding an Israeli policeman in Israeli-occupied and annexed East Jerusalem, police sources said.
Israel Police said in a statement that a "suspect" had "stabbed a police officer near the Mendelbaum gas station on Route 1 in Jerusalem." "The forces chased the suspect and neutralized him," it said. Police said the attacker was a Palestinian from East Jerusalem. A police spokesman later confirmed that he had been killed.
'Serious but stable condition'
Shaare Tsedek Hospital, where the injured policeman was taken, said it had received a man in his 30s who had been "stabbed in the torso" and was in a "serious but stable condition".
The attack came as Israeli forces intensify their ground offensive in the Palestinian territory of Gaza, as part of retaliation for Hamas attacks on October 7 that authorities say killed 1,400 people in Israel, most of them civilians. The Hamas government's health ministry in the Gaza Strip says more than 8,300 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in Israeli shelling since the war began on October 7.

The situation in the West Bank, occupied by Israel since 1967, is also extremely tense: nearly 120 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli soldiers or settlers since the beginning of the war between Hamas and Israel.
