Following a report by citizens yesterday (Tuesday) to the Nature and Parks Authority's hotline about oil stains on the beach and the pungent smell of diesel fuel in the Shikmona Nature Reserve, an inspector from the Authority's marine unit and an inspector from the National Marine Environmental Protection Unit arrived at the compound and identified severe diesel fuel pollution in the coastal area of the reserve.

In a joint consultation between the Nature and Parks Authority and members of the National Marine Environmental Protection Unit of the Ministry of Environmental Protection, it was decided to absorb the diesel fuel using special equipment, which was quickly transported to the site by the Authority's inspectors. Further investigation revealed that the source of the contamination was a leak from a barrel that washed ashore. After the treatment and absorption of the oil, it seems that the situation in the reserve has returned to normal, and an investigation is now underway to locate the person responsible for the barrel.

The Nature and Parks Authority and the Ministry of Environmental Protection noted that incidents of this type, such as diesel fuel pollution, cause damage to protected natural values and life at sea and on the coast, while animals and unique vegetation are harmed as a result of the pollution, and therefore it is important to quickly clean the contaminated area.
