Former U.S. Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, the first woman appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court, died on Friday, Dec. 1, at the age of 93, the court said in a statement.
She died Friday morning in Phoenix, the institution said, adding that she suffered from "advanced dementia, probably Alzheimer's, and respiratory disease." Appointed to the Supreme Court in 1981 by then-Republican President Ronald Reagan, she retired in 2006.
