A group of supporters of Yekaterina Duntsova gathered in Moscow yesterday to show their support for her candidacy for the Russian presidential election next March, the MoscowTimes reports, citing the election committee of the pro-peace politician and journalist in Ukraine. Russian law requires a group of at least 500 people to gather in a place to support the would-be candidate as a first step in a candidacy.
According to the election committee in Duntsova, the location of the rally was kept secret until the last minute to avoid police intervention and during the event the lights were unexpectedly turned off. "These little shenanigans will probably continue, but we will overcome them together," the committee said.
But in order to be a candidate, Duntsova will also have to collect 300,000 signatures in at least 40 regions of the country and submit them to the Central Election Commission for review.
Radio Liberty reports that human rights activist Olga Suvorova was arrested in Krasnoyarsk today as soon as she arrived in the Siberian city from Moscow, where she had attended a rally to support Duntsova's candidacy. The arrest would be linked to a complaint by the activist, who in October accused the police of assaulting her. Now the Russian police are accusing her of reporting "falsely".
