Attal's father is a descendant of the Jews of Alsace and Tunisia. Attal will replace outgoing Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne, who resigned after 20 months in office.
Attal's appointment as prime minister comes as part of Macron's efforts to present a fresh and young cabinet ahead of this summer's European Parliament elections.
