The war cabinet met Wednesday evening to discuss efforts to free the hostages held by Hamas in the Gaza Strip, amid the large gaps that remain between the sides that make it impossible to reach a deal at this stage, senior Israeli officials said.
Why it's important:
- Israeli officials say that the main decision Israel must make right now is whether to agree to the principle that any deal to release the hostages will ultimately lead to the end of the war and the withdrawal of IDF forces from Gaza.

News Focus:
- As reported by Walla, senior adviser to President Biden Brett McGurk held talks with the Qatari prime minister in Doha on Tuesday about possible proposals that could lead to a breakthrough in negotiations.
- A senior Israeli official noted that after the talks with McGurk, the Qataris submitted to Israel an updated proposal for a multi-stage outline for the release of the hostages.
- At the same time, an ISA delegation visited Cairo today for talks with senior Egyptian intelligence officials who also dealt with the issue of the abductees.
- A senior Israeli official said that the Qatari proposal is not dramatically different from previous proposals submitted to Israel, and that it also includes a humanitarian prisoner exchange in the first stage, and an IDF withdrawal from Gaza in the final stage.
