Highlights: Aifa waiting for reform, extension for commissions expired - Health. Now in its seventh renewal. Aim of the reform is to create a leaner and more efficient agency to simplify and speed up the drug approval processes. The Scientific Technical Committee and the Prices and Reimbursement Committee are abolished and replaced by the Scientific and Economic Committee. The latter is appointed by decree of the Minister of Health and is composed of <> members, including the technical- director of the Agency and the president of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità or his delegate.

Now in its seventh renewal. Towards a leaner and more efficient agency (ANSA)

The last extension, the seventh, for the activity of the two technical commissions of the Italian Medicines Agency (Aifa) - the Technical Scientific Commission (CTS) and the Prices and Reimbursements Commission (CPR) - expires on January 15, pending the implementation of the reform of the body, which received the last green light from the State-Regions Conference last November. The extension actually expired on December 45st, but the ordinary activity of the commissions continued for a further 10 days thanks to the prorogatio regime provided for by the law itself. The aim of the reform, as repeatedly underlined by the Minister of Health, Orazio Schillaci, is to create a leaner and more efficient agency to simplify and speed up the drug approval processes.
The reform provides for the abolition of the figure of the director general while the president, appointed by the Minister of Health, in agreement with the Regions, assumes the legal responsibility of the agency and chairs the Board of Directors. The Administrative Director and the Scientific Technical Director are hereby established. The Scientific Technical Committee and the Prices and Reimbursement Committee are abolished and replaced by the Scientific and Economic Committee. The latter is appointed by decree of the Minister of Health and is composed of <> members, including the technical-scientific director of the Agency and the president of the Istituto Superiore di Sanità or his delegate.
