About 13,000 passengers are affected by the cancellation of all flights of the ailing Aigle Azur, according to the French Ministry of Transport. The majority of the people, around 11,000, had been booked on flights to Algeria, said the Secretary of State for Transport, Jean-Baptiste Djebbari, the daily newspaper "Le Parisien". But flights to Portugal, Russia or Brazil have not started, it said.
Together with other airlines, including Air France, an aid plan was created to bring the passengers to their destinations, so Djebbari. The travelers can not hope for compensation for the time being.
The airline had canceled all flights from Saturday. The financial situation of the company and the resulting operational difficulties did not allow flights to be guaranteed beyond Friday evening, the airline announced on Thursday evening. Last week, a commercial court near Paris opened a formal reorganization procedure for Aigle Azur.
Potential buyers have until Monday afternoon time to make an offer. Djebbari was confident that a buyer for Aigle Azur will be found. Among other things, the Air France Group, Easy Jet and Air Caribbean were according to Djebbari with the idea to submit an offer. The airline, founded in 1946, specializes in flights from France to Algeria. It operates eleven aircraft.
