Pseudo off-road vehicles: BMW benefits from the SUV boom

2019-09-09T10:40:27.187Z

At BMW, no vehicle segment is growing as fast as the SUVs - they accounted for just under half of all cars sold last month. Electric vehicles, on the other hand, sell badly.

After a fatal accident with an SUV in Berlin such vehicles are in the criticism. But the latest figures of the car maker BMW show that German car buyers prefer these cars. The car manufacturer sold in July, a good third more than in the same month last year. "Our new X models are very popular with customers," said Sales Director Pieter Nota at the IAA Motor Show.

Overall, BMW sold 157,889 cars last month, 4.1 percent more than a year earlier. Responsible for the plus were in particular the SUV models. The city SUVs accounted for almost half of the BMW cars sold.

On the other hand, sales of electrified vehicles are falling. In August, it was seven percent less than a year ago, in the year to date, a decline of three percent to book.

Over the year, the BMW brand sold 1.39 million cars in the first eight months. This allowed the Munich Group to shorten the gap to its rival Mercedes-Benz from the Daimler Group, which sold 1.5 million cars by the end of August. The VW subsidiary Audi has so far sold 1.21 million cars in the current year and is thus clearly behind the competition.
