Reporting on climate change is one of the major journalistic challenges of our time. The climate crisis is also one of the most important issues of humanity for SPIEGEL. For this reason, we support an international initiative that seeks to take a look this week: "Covering Climate Now" was initiated by the Columbia Journalism Review and the Canadian newspaper "The Nation", with more than 200 media companies around the world, including the Guardian, El País, La Repubblica, The Times of India, Bloomberg or Vanity Fair. SPIEGEL is dedicating the cover story of the current issue to the climate crisis this week and every day pays special attention to mirror.de
In the run-up to the "Friday-for-Future" demonstrations, Daimler is preparing for actions by climateists. This is clear from several internal e-mails that have been sent in recent weeks by the group security and security management and are aimed at, among others, executives in the Daimler sites in Germany. The emails are available to SPIEGEL.
The student strikes under the motto "Fridays for Future" reach a climax this Friday: In Germany alone, demos are planned in more than 500 cities.
A letter from the Daimler AG's safety management states: "From Bremen we were recently informed that there are also indications in social media in connection with the official FFF demonstrations that it might already be causing direct disruption to the next Friday." Causing the Evil 'can come. "
"Protests against the entire industry are likely"
Which production and distribution locations could be exactly affected, although not known. However, the so-called situation center of the group would observe the situation.
Last Sunday several hundred demonstrators of the "Sand in the Gear" coalition blocked the access to the IAA Motor Show in Frankfurt for hours. In August, climate activists stopped a DB Autozug at Wolfsburg, delaying the delivery of Volkswagen vehicles.
An e-mail from the Daimler Group Security shows that the car maker was warned by the Federal Criminal Police Office "before further action, comparable to the VW against Wolfsburg" already. The Federal Criminal Investigation emphasize, "that other automakers could get into the focus" of the activists. Protests against the entire industry and individual companies are therefore "likely", it says in a document of corporate security.
More about the climate crisis
The individual Daimler locations were called in the letter to "assess the risk situation" and to develop an "emergency planning". In addition, the e-mails contain instructions for employees in the event of incidents. In protests against the Daimler AG, it is said, "de-escalating behavior" in dealing with the activists "absolutely essential".
A spokesman for the group informs on request that they do not comment on issues of corporate security in public.
