The State Office for Environmental Protection and Nature Conservation (Lanuv) claims that almost every citizen in the most densely populated federal state had access to possibly germ-laden goods of the hessian sausage manufacturer Wilke. "Wilke was a big supplier and also produced precursors for private labels of other companies," said Lanuv spokesman Wilhelm Deitermann of the "Rheinische Post".
In the northern Hessian district of Waldeck-Frankenberg, the sausage plant Wilke was closed for the time being last Wednesday after two deaths by bacteria. The Group's customers included wholesalers, old people's homes and hospitals.
Cause of the deaths were, according to a district spokesman Listeria, which were found in the meat of the company. In healthy people, Listeria can cause flu-like symptoms. However, for high-risk groups, including the elderly or pregnant women, the bacteria can be deadly.
