There are Michelin stars. And those of AirlinesRating. This site, which aggregates the opinions of users and compiles statistical data on their safety, establishes each year its ranking of airlines around the world.

405 of them were thus analyzed for 2019, each collecting from 1 to 7 stars. Result: 9 companies were blacklisted. Translate: considered dangerous. They do not have the right to fly in Europe or the United States, or in any of these two airspace.

No French companies among the best

So you're unlikely to have used their services. In doubt and in case, here are their names anyway.

With only one star: Nepal Airlines (Nepal). With two stars: Nok Air (Thailand), Airlines PNG (Papua New Guinea), Ariana Afghan Airlines (Afghanistan), Kam Air (Afghanistan), Iraqi Airways (Iraq), AirAsia Thailand (Thailand) and US-Bangla Airlines ( Bangladesh).

Conversely, here are the best airlines, according to Airlinesrating.

2019 Company of the Year: Singapore Airlines (this was Air New Zealand in 2017 and 2018). Best First Class: Singapore Airlines. Best Business Class: Qatar Airways. Best economy class "premium": Air New Zealand. Best eco class: Korean Air. Best low cost airlines: Air Asia (Asia-Pacific), Wizz (Europe), Westjet (Americas). Best regional company: Qantas (Australia).

A classification to relativize

On what criteria are these rankings established? There are obviously several: fleet age, number of fatal accidents over the last ten years, black lists established by the countries themselves, Operational Safety Audi certificates (IOSA) and compliance with international safety standards ...

That said, this ranking remains to relativize. Malaysia Airlines experienced two crashes in 2014 (those of MH 370 and MH17 flights), but is not one of the most dangerous companies. Similarly, the recent crashes of Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines involving Boeing 737 Max have not dented their rankings.

For a simple reason, AirlinesRating does not want to know who is responsible for an air crash: the company (maintenance or flight problem) or the manufacturer (device design problem).

Be that as it may, the big airlines remain the safest - not necessarily the best rated by travelers. But the important thing, is not it, is to arrive safe and sound.
