Listeria infestation: Third death confirmed in the Wilke sausage scandal

There is a third death in the scandal involving sausages contaminated with listeria. According to a report by the Robert Koch Institute, many patients may have been infected by hospitals or retirement homes.

The case of germ-laden sausages seems to be larger than previously thought. As the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) writes in Epidemologische Bulletin No. 41, three deaths and a total of at least 37 cases from the years 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 are attributable to the same listeriosis outbreak. The number of unrecognized people who have been infected with the sausage infected with Listeria should be much higher. This is mainly due to the fact that blood tests were not always carried out on the patients, but also stool samples whose results are not reportable. The consumer organization Foodwatch first reported on the new bulletin on Thursday.

The three deceased are therefore people from Baden-Württemberg, North Rhine-Westphalia and Saxony-Anhalt, who died "directly" or "indirectly" at the Listeriosis. The Hessian Ministry of Consumer Protection confirmed at the request of SPIEGEL the. So far, two deaths had been reported in connection with the germ-laden sausage in Hessen. third. The germs presumably come from products of the Hessian manufacturer Wilke. The report of the RKI merely refers to an unspecified Hessian enterprise. By the information of the district Waldeck-Frankenberg from the past week is however known that the company Wilke was closed due to Listerienbefunden and is related to deaths.

According to the report, the RKI suspects that many sufferers have become infected with food in healthcare facilities such as hospitals, rehab clinics or old people's homes. For example, 20 out of 28 affected people in 2018 and 2019 had "inpatient care" in such an institution.
