2019-11-03T09:49:46.881Z

Tons of meat products had to be destroyed because of Listeria infestation at the manufacturer Wilke. At a meatballs manufacturer in Lower Saxony there was another find - and now probably also in Baden-Württemberg.

After the Listeria scandal at the meat producer Wilke, with which three deaths are associated, there is apparently another outbreak of Listeriosis in Germany. As the "Bild am Sonntag" reports, a meat-processing company in Baden-Württemberg is under suspicion.

According to this, the dangerous bacteria of type Pi 4 were already detected in a production plant in the affected company in January. Two years ago, the Listerienstamm had been found there once during a routine official inspection in a food.

The responsible consumer minister Peter Hauck had "promptly initiated an intensive investigative activity of food control," said a spokeswoman for the authorities.

Listeria (Listeria monocytogenes) are bacteria that occur in nature. Only a few people get sick of the so-called listeriosis. In healthy adults, the infectious disease is usually inconspicuous or takes a harmless course with flu-like symptoms. The infection is dangerous for immunocompromised people and pregnant women. The number of diseases varies between 300 and 600 cases per year in Germany. On average, seven percent kill fatally.

In connection with the Listeria discovery at meat producer Wilke, the public prosecutor's office in Kassel investigates the director for negligent homicide. Three people died from the food and 37 others fell ill.
