Holidays at a glance: How to extend your holiday in 2020

2019-11-12T15:40:58.154Z

Christmas, Easter, Pentecost - these holidays are perfect for planning a longer holiday. But also the day of work and Ascension are attractive in 2020. Berliners are particularly happy.

The years 2018 and 2019 were a good year for the employee. Several times a longer break was possible. This also applies to 2020. However, you should submit your holiday early. Because: In total, three public holidays fall on a Saturday. Here you can see which periods are particularly suitable for a long weekend or a holiday lasting several weeks.

The holidays at a glance:

New Year: January 1st falls on Wednesday in 2020. Thus, you can already plan a longer vacation between the end of December and the beginning of January with just four days off. Because the 28th and 29th of December 2019 fall on a weekend, you would have to submit "only" for the 27th and 30th and the 2nd and 3rd of January holiday. Thus, an employee would theoretically be free from December 24th to January 6th.

Because the 6th of January in Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg and Saxony-Anhalt is also a public holiday, residents of these states would even have another day off. But beware: Theoretically, you would have to take the 31st vacation. However, employers on New Year's Eve often show some kindness and "give" their employees an extra day off.

Easter: Easter is traditionally good for planning a longer holiday. Since both Good Friday (10 April) and Easter Monday (13 April) are public holidays, you can stay away from the 6th to the 19th of April next year with "only" eight days off work. For a longer trip, it would also be conceivable to submit holidays from 14 to 30 April. Because May 1 (Labor Day) falls on a Friday in 2020, you have an extra day off.

Labor Day: May 1st (test your knowledge here) falls on a Friday, as already mentioned. Thus, assuming you are planning to travel for a long weekend, you will not have to submit a holiday at all.

Liberation Day: Do you work in Berlin? Then we have good news: The Liberation Day on May 8 is a one-time holiday in 2020. And to celebrate the day, he falls even on a Friday. Anyone who takes off Thursday, can build a four-day weekend for a short trip.

Here you will find an overview of all holidays and holidays in Germany until 2023

Corpus Christi: The 11th of June, which is a public holiday in Baden-Wuerttemberg, Bavaria, Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland, is also a great opportunity for a long weekend. A holiday in this case means four days off.

Ascension: Always good for a long weekend is Christ's Ascension Day: 40 days after Easter, this nationwide holiday will reliably fall on a Thursday and in 2020 on May 21st. Those who take a day off get four days without work.

Pentecost: Pentecost also offers a long weekend thanks to the free Whit Monday (1 June). But even here you can plan a longer holiday: If you take the Friday after Ascension and the week before Pentecost, you can get six days off a twelve-day break.

Day of German Unity: So far the good news, now there is a bad one: The Day of German Unity falls on a Saturday in 2020. Thus, the period between late September and early October does not offer to save holidays. This will annoy above all Oktoberfest visitors, who could plan in the past years always a long weekend at the Oktoberfest.

Christmas: Traditionally, the time between Christmas and New Year can be used well for a holiday. Although the Christmas holidays in 2020 fall on a Friday and Saturday, you can stay away from working with "just" seven days off from 19 December to 2 January - provided you are one of those lucky enough to spend half a day on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve have to take.

In some federal states there are additional holidays. However, these are extremely unfavorable from the Workers' View 2020: The Assumption Day (15 August) and the Reformation Day (31 October) - like the Day of German Unity (3 October) - fall on a Saturday. The International Women's Day (8 March), which is officially a public holiday in Berlin since a change of law in January 2019, falls on a Sunday. Allerheiligen (1 November), after all, a holiday in five federal states, 2020 is also unfavorably a Sunday.
