Child benefit and child supplement are so far separated. The Social Democrats are now planning a new regulation of family benefits - which should be based on income.

The maximum amount for children over 14 years should be 478 euros: At their party congress in December, the SPD wants to adopt a concept for new rules on child benefits. "We want to offer a living cash benefit that summarizes all previous family benefits," said acting party leader Malu Dreyer the newspapers of Funke media group.

"It should be graduated according to income situation of the parents. The poorer the family is, the higher the cash benefit will be," said Dreyer to the plans. Accordingly, there should be a monthly base amount of 250 euros.

Extra affiliate account for each child

Already months ago, Social Minister Hubertus Heil had announced changes to child benefits. At that time, the SPD politician announced that the service should be merged with the less widespread child allowance.

The plans now proposed by Dreyer also provide for a participation account in the form of a children's ticket with a monthly sum of 30 euros. This would give children the opportunity to "go to the sports club, the music school or the pool - regardless of the purse of the parents," said the politician. In addition, there should be nationwide among other non-contributory day care and free travel in local transport for children.

Since 1 July 2019, child benefit for the first and second child is € 204 per month, € 210 for the third child and € 235 for each additional child.
