Converted barn in Chiemgau: Stadel obliges

2019-12-14T06:35:26.748Z

A Munich architect turned a 120-year-old barn in Upper Bavaria into a modern holiday home - without Alpenkitsch, but with great attention to detail and natural materials.

Barn find with a difference: For her weekend house on Lake Chiemsee, Munich architect Stephanie Thatenhorst converted the hay storage on her family's farm into a refuge where she can escape from the gray of everyday life. The 200 square meters of floor space with a ceiling height of eight meters offered good conditions for an expansion, which should give the building a new purpose and change the existing substance as little as possible.

Only insulation material and larger windows had to be inserted into the walls, the screed floor is also fresh. Otherwise, many elements of the old farm building have been preserved: the wooden cladding with the beautiful gray-brown patina and the massive roof beams. The old floorboards are now stairs to the bedrooms.

The doors are new, but are hanging on roller tracks on the upper floor. A bow to the former use of the building that had served as a barn for 120 years. Thatenhorst had the walls plastered with dark gray clay. So that the wall color does not darken your mood, the architect placed isolated, but all the more powerful color accents in the living room.

Minimalist design, lots of wood: barn outside, lounge inside

The sofa is covered with sage green velvet, in front of it is a pink carpet, on which there is an orange lacquer table and two armchairs in the Windsor style. The elm wood in the open kitchen also gives a nice contrast to the dark walls. With its elongated work island, it gives structure to the large room and separates the living area from the cooking area.

Thatenhorst placed a round dining table between the kitchen and the sofa, around which she placed eight Superleggera chairs. The design classics by Gio Ponti and a large hanging lamp made of steel and brass tubes bring glamor to the dining area. Brass was also used in the kitchen and bathroom, where the water flows from brass fittings. The black sinks are particularly eye-catching.

People don't sleep in straw like they used to, but under the roof. Here you will find a children's room for the two sons of the family and the large master bedroom with the free-standing bathtub in front of the double bed as a highlight. There is also a walk-in shower in the bedroom and a walk-in closet. The boys have their own bathroom.

Children are less enthusiastic about wet rooms, they love small "caves" to crumble. In the children's room, this function is performed by an area under the loft bed. There is space here for toys, books and odds and ends. The sleeping place is climbed by a pool ladder. That looks cool and definitely not like a swimming pool, because the stainless steel ladder is not highly polished, but shimmers steel blue. Graphically patterned carpets in front of the beds loosen up the whole thing. A stool is enough as a bedside table.

This interior design concept with its mixture of alpine flair and modern design convinced the expert jury of the "Best of Interior" award for interior design: "In this barn, Chiemgau meets the large, wide design world. With more feeling for the environment, its own home and contemporary You can hardly set up design, "she writes in her reasoning for the first prize. There is nothing to add.
