Former Renault and Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn has left Japan, according to several media reports. Ghosn, who was last under house arrest in Tokyo, flew to Lebanon on Monday, writes the newspaper "Les Echos", citing insiders. There was initially no official confirmation for the report. In addition to being French, the former car manager also has Lebanese and Brazilian citizenship.
Ghosn is charged in Japan with breach of trust and financial misconduct by Renault's Japanese partner Nissan. He is accused of claiming that his income is too low, that he harmed the car manufacturer Nissan by five million euros and that he personally enriched himself. He was arrested in November 2018. Ghosn rejected the allegations. The most recent announcement was that his trial should begin in April.
The circumstances of his departure from Japan are unclear. According to the Wall Street Journal, he fled the country. Other reports say there may have been a deal with the Japanese authorities. According to the New York Times, Ghosn spent a large part of his youth in Lebanon and maintains family connections there.
