Fly greener: For long-haul flights from San Francisco to Frankfurt and Munich, Lufthansa and its subsidiary Swiss will use eco-fuel - made from old fat.

In the future, Lufthansa and its subsidiary Swiss will fill up with eco-fuel at San Francisco Airport for the flights to Frankfurt, Munich and Zurich. The energy group Shell and the North American biofuel provider World Energy have entered into a long-term cooperation to develop the supply of sustainable aviation fuel, Shell said.

The delivery contract to the Lufthansa Group in San Francisco runs for a volume of 3.8 million liters. It is fuel from agricultural waste fats and oils from a World Energy refinery in California. Up to 30 percent of this is added to conventional kerosene.

Aviation contributes slightly less than three percent to global CO2 emissions and has so far had problems improving its carbon footprint. The industry primarily relies on more economical engines and compensatory measures. The development of sustainable synthetic fuels and sales are still in their infancy; a marketable solution is not in sight.
