Being an entrepreneur is sometimes akin to a priesthood, which for women often takes on the appearance of the Stations of the Cross. Some 224 million women are entrepreneurs worldwide, which represents 35% of businesses in the global economy, according to the report "Women at the heart of the economy" of the Women's Forum for the Economy & Society. On a European scale, their share reaches 34.4%. In France, if women account for half of the working population, only three in ten are entrepreneurs.
In 2019, 40% of sole proprietorships were created by women, according to INSEE - a stable proportion since 2015, after years of increase. They were in the majority in the human health and social action sectors (75%), and in household services (72%). On the other hand, they occupied a very small share in transport and warehousing and construction.
