The appeal of several hundred NGOs, the World Bank and the IMF was not enough. While debt relief for poor countries was a key issue at the G20 finance ministers and central bankers' meeting on Saturday, the virtual meeting had little effect.
Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire said the G20 was "on track to get an agreement" on extending the moratorium, and called for a decision "as soon as possible" .

However, representatives of the twenty largest powers have only indicated that they "would consider an extension" of the current system in the coming months, depending on "the evolution of the pandemic" . They will vote after receiving "the results of an IMF and World Bank report on the liquidity needs of eligible countries" by October.
