The automotive supplier Mahle wants to cut 7,600 jobs worldwide.
In Germany, around 2000 jobs are affected by the reduction, said the Stuttgart-based company.
The corona crisis intensifies the pressure to act.
A return to the pre-crisis level can only be expected in several years.
"We are dealing with a crisis that we have never experienced before," said Mahle boss Jörg Stratmann.
Talks with the responsible employee representatives are now to be started at short notice, as Labor Director Anke Felder added.
Mahle generated sales of around twelve billion euros in 2019 and is represented with more than 77,000 employees at 160 production sites in more than 30 countries.
