When Siemens came into the focus of the "Fridays for Future" movement at the beginning of the year, the Munich-based company was practically unprepared for the severity of the criticism of the Group's involvement in the Adani coal mining project.
Siemens intends to continue to adhere to the relevant contracts, but is also looking for strategies to publicly demonstrate its commitment to climate protection.
Now the group has decided to take part in an initiative by the US giant Amazon.
Siemens is now a new member of the "Climate Pledge", as announced by the German Amazon branch in Munich.
Ten years faster than the Paris Agreement?
Amazon founded the climate initiative in 2019 together with a non-governmental organization called Global Optimism.
All participating companies undertake to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement ten years earlier - and to operate in a climate-neutral manner by 2040.
Among other things, Amazon wants to purchase 100,000 electric delivery vehicles for its parcel carriers.
"Every company has to play a role in the fight against climate change," said Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, according to a press release.
For Siemens, joining is more of a symbolic sign to the public, because independently of Amazon, the Munich-based company set itself more ambitious goals early on.
"In September 2015, Siemens became the first global industrial company to commit to achieving climate neutrality for our global business operations by 2030," said CEO Joe Kaeser.
Siemens states that it will convert all factories and buildings to climate-neutral energy supply by 2030.
