EU agriculture: Interview with Martin Häusling from the Greens: "Ms. Klöckner deceives the public"

2020-10-20T17:30:50.933Z

In Brussels, 387 billion euros are currently being redistributed - for agriculture alone. The green EU parliamentarian Martin Häusling warns of the bad ecological balance of the deal and blames Germany for it.

SPIEGEL:

Mr. Häusling, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has set the course for an ambitious greening of the EU with her Green Deal.

How are these objectives reflected in the reform of the common agricultural policy (CAP) that is currently being adopted?

Häusling:

Not at all.

On the contrary: everything points to the fact that the current CAP will be even less sustainable than the current one.

Instead of finally tying the direct payments to the environmental services of the farmers, 60 percent of the 387 billion euro budget until almost 2027 is paid for land ownership alone.

The majority of environmental services should not be made mandatory, but remain predominantly voluntary.

I consider this to be a taxpayer fraud.

SPIEGEL:

Doesn't the new proposal have to be based on the new, declared ecological goals of the Commission?

Häusling:

Ms. von der Leyen and her agricultural commissioner Janusz Wojciechowski failed to submit a new, revised proposal.

We are voting on the old one drawn up by the then Commissioner before the Green Deal.

That's absurd.
