Corona crisis hits the economy: France fears for its bistros

The French economy threatens another slump in the face of new curfews. The already badly battered restaurateurs are hit particularly hard - they fear that the cafés will die out on a dramatic scale.

Edouardo Cardoso Scarabel immediately rewrote the personnel plans for his café, following the announcements by Emmanuel Macron.

Normally 30 employees work in three shifts at Café Charlot in Paris's Marais district: from 7 a.m. to 2 a.m.

They serve everything from breakfast coffee to lunch to late-evening cocktails.

But now they have to close the café at 9 p.m.

Then the night curfew imposed by Macron begins.

The corona infection numbers are skyrocketing, the state is folding up the sidewalks.

And so Café Charlot is being hit hard again by the pandemic.

First came the lockdown in the spring;

since then, sales have been a good third lower than in normal times.

How should it go on with the new restrictions?

Historic crash

France's restaurateurs have to fear for their existence again.

And with them hundreds of other companies in the country.

The crisis that seemed to be over in the summer is back.

And the second wave could do even more damage than the first.
