Electromobility: VDA President Hildegar Müller calls for charging network summit

There is great demand for e-cars, but not the supply of charging stations. The auto industry therefore wants a conference "with all players" as soon as possible.

From the perspective of the automotive industry, the German network of charging stations for e-cars must be expanded quickly.

According to the industry association VDA, the course for this is to be set at a conference with federal, state and local governments and representatives of other industries.

"I want a charging network summit with all the players, and it should take place before Christmas," said VDA President Hildegard Müller to the editorial network in Germany.

According to Müller, building management, mineral oil companies, parking garage operators and airports should also take part in this in addition to the federal, state and local governments.

"We need the new players at the table, everyone who has to be involved in setting up a charging infrastructure."

In addition, Müller demanded: "Every municipality should now present an expansion plan for electromobility, every mayor must put this at the top of the agenda."

The demand for e-cars is great, also because of increased government purchase premiums.

In October, the number of newly registered cars with electric or hybrid drives was almost 48,000, according to figures from the Federal Motor Transport Authority.

That corresponds to a market share of 17.5 percent.

In January, with almost 16,000 cars, it was still a market share of 6.7 percent.

Federal government far removed from climate protection goal

The federal government considers seven to ten million e-cars on German roads in Germany to be necessary by 2030 in order to achieve climate protection goals.

Car traffic is a long way from achieving this goal: at the beginning of 2020, of 47.7 million registered cars, only 0.5 percent were purely e-cars or hybrids.

Experts see a need to catch up, especially in the charging network.

Volkswagen works council chairman Bernd Osterloh has also called on politicians to give the auto industry more support during the upheaval.

"At least as important as billions in budgets are a common understanding of change and sufficient planning security," said Osterloh following the carmaker's investment planning round.

This requires everyone, the workforce, managers, the board of directors and politicians.

"I am thinking of the latter especially with a view to Berlin and Brussels and long-running topics such as charging infrastructure and fast internet," said Osterloh.

VW is relying on more climate-friendly drives and stronger networking.

The car manufacturer has meanwhile announced that another fully electric car will be built in the Emden plant with the "Aero".

The Passat, which was previously produced in Emden, will in future be manufactured in Bratislava by the Czech subsidiary Skoda for cost reasons.
