Christmas shopping: the simulation that makes traders dream

2020-12-19T17:58:48.842Z

By extrapolating from opinion polls, the union of craftsmen and traders (U2P) estimates at 9 billion euros the sums that can be disbursed.

What if… What if, with the approach of Christmas, the French spend even half of their holiday budget in local shops?

So, the latter could see the trifle of 9 billion euros in turnover pouring in!

This is the conclusion of a recent study by the U2P (Union of local businesses), which represents no less than three million traders, craftsmen and liberal professions.

The authors of this study have the French at their word: according to a YouGov survey, 7 out of ten respondents intend to spend a significant part of their budget near their home, in their city centers.

Knowing that the average Christmas budget is 603 euros (according to a Cofidis study from November 2020), if half, already, were spent locally by the 29 million French households, then we would reach this figure of 9 billion.

Admittedly, this extrapolation is - for the moment - theoretical, but it shows the importance of the stakes of this period before the holidays: “We often think of food professions such as butchers, fishmongers, chocolate makers, etc.

There are also hairdressers, toy stores and even decoration stores… All of them have a great need for cash at the end of 2020 ”, recalls Laurent Munerot, president of the U2P, who reviews the situation of the most of these independents.

“In 2020, they obtained deferral of charges and loans guaranteed by the State to hold, but all will find themselves facing the wall of debt in 2021. This is why it is strategic for them to fill up with liquidity in this end of the year ”, he pleads.

Oysters, foie gras, capons ... before Christmas, the festive products play their all-out

From Christmas dinner to the tree, through gifts, decorations, even the outfit and the festive hairstyle, the opportunities to support these companies are numerous.

Especially since consumers have confidence in the ability of craftsmen and traders to enforce barrier gestures: only 7% of French people feel they are putting their health at risk by going to local shops, i.e. 40 points less than in supermarkets.

Will consumers keep their promises to “run” the local economy?

Answer in January.
