How can the New Years be even more successful professionally? Here are eight career resolutions that really work - because they outsmart the comfort zones in the brain.

New projects make you happy.

On the one hand.

Unfortunately, on the other hand, our brain loves comfort zones and prefers not to change anything.

How do we get ourselves to take important steps in our career?

I want to be promoted

Good idea.

And why should you be promoted?

There is only one reason to convince: because with your promotion you will make your boss and your company even more successful.

  • Formulate: What can I achieve?

    Where?

  • Talk about it again and again, briefly, of course, do not put any pressure on.

  • Always be positive about your company to get yourself in the mood for a promotion.

    It is contagious.

I want to stop burying myself too much in my work

Calming work is the brain's comfort zone.

You have an argument, you don't resolve it, you work.

Children are cranky, you don't play with them, you withdraw and work.

Without work, there is a void that you need to explore and overcome before you can start working less:

  • Does the desire come from myself or from others?

  • What does all this work protect me from?

    Can I compensate for that?

  • What could be exciting and pleasant about working less?

  • Don't plan to stop at 5 p.m., decide to stop at 5 p.m.

I want to change the company and finally apply more often

Applying is always good if there is an advertisement.

It is even better to be found, addressed, recommended by others.

How can you do that?

Check and optimize:

  • How do you speak effectively about yourself?

  • Which success words are in your social media profiles, in your resume, in your e-mail signature?

  • Do you maintain your solidarity with influential people whom you can refer regularly?

With compliments, thank you and greeting cards, small gifts and invitations?

I want to finally tell my boss the truth about her lousy behavior

And then?

Do you make a big impact as an admired heroine, grateful colleagues surround you, the boss is admonished and shows her understanding?

Never ever.

If you want to achieve something, it is better to be strategic:

  • Maintain your resilience, i.e. your psychological resistance

  • Talk to your coach or someone you trust, not your boss.

  • Focus on tasks that you enjoy.

  • Just follow the instructions of your supervisor without any complications, or switch to another location.

I want to finally get a raise

You can't enforce anything - it's a negotiation situation.

  • You need: first: a specific amount that you want, second: a lower limit (below which you will definitely leave the company), third: a sum to start negotiations.

  • Justify your claim solely on the basis of the benefits you bring to the company, best substantiated with figures.

Prepare the mood: repeatedly briefly draw attention to your achievements and successes.

I want to take early retirement

What sounds worth striving for often turns into a disaster after a year or two.

The sudden lack of interest is hard to bear, especially for managers: no pig calls.

The pensioner is from now on absolutely uninteresting, even invisible.

Nobody asks them to give a lecture, participate in a panel or advise a young entrepreneur - not even on a voluntary basis.

Then how do you get flow, recognition, intellectual inspiration?

If you have had a hard rock band for years, with whom you will tour the world for the next 20 years and the contracts have already been signed - then: Go strong!

Otherwise: Better give up on this resolution.

I want to meditate so that I can get down better

What looks easy, like sitting around and doing nothing, is very difficult to maintain for many people.

And then they don't meditate, but rather grieve that they don't.

In the long run, however, meditation is one of the best ways to calm your thoughts.

  • Start with a simple course to find out if this is even for you.

  • If you find it difficult but you like it, hold on.

Every single breath in the silence works.

  • If you don't like it, find a sport that brings you down, do tai chi, or learn relaxation techniques.

I want to thank the people who supported me

This idea is so good because you are signaling: I see your support and mean a lot to me.

Your supporters feel encouraged and continue their efforts.

  • Find opportunities to be thankful.

Gratitude is the best career tip - more effective than anyone else.

  • ALWAYS thank for an invitation, whether you want to / can accept it or not.

  • Write lots of thank you cards.

It is best to always have cards, envelopes and stamps on your desk.

  • Tell others how grateful you are to that person, how they shaped and inspired you.

Gratitude not only pleases the recipient: it also has a great effect on your attitude towards life.

You write thank you cards and you see the world anew, full of people who mean well with you.
