Covid-19 and partial unemployment: the State will help "as long as it takes", assures Elisabeth Borne

"Whatever the cost will last as long as necessary", promises the Minister of Labor on Tuesday about government aid p

“The priority is to protect jobs.

The speech of the Minister of Labor, Employment and Integration, guest of RTL this Tuesday, is likely to decide with that of the Minister of Public Accounts Olivier Dussopt.

"It is necessary that 2021 marks the exit of

whatever it costs

", he insisted in the columns of Echoes last Wednesday.

"There is no doubt:

whatever it costs

will last as long as the crisis requires", opposes Elisabeth Borne.

"As long as the crisis makes it necessary, we will protect jobs with partial activity," continues the Minister.

Why did Olivier Dussopt then brandish, a few days earlier, the specter of an end to aid at a time when the economic situation is worrying, and while the health crisis has destroyed 800,000 jobs in 2020?

"I think he is optimistic about the way out of the crisis", reacts Élisabeth Borne with a smile.

Faced with a most delicate situation in certain sectors, the Minister calls on those who usually use seasonal contracts to hire, even if their activity is stopped, as is the case for ski lifts.

“The State takes charge of 100% of the seasonal worker, insists Elisabeth Borne.

In the spring, there were nearly nine million employees whose remuneration was supported by the state, which helped save jobs.

In November, three million, ”she explains.

Unemployment insurance reform: the government's tracks

The Minister of Labor also reaffirms her desire to complete the reform of unemployment insurance, the day after meetings with the social partners.

"I proposed to the social partners that the rules of the future system be adapted to the situation of the labor market," she indicates.

[…] We must take into account the health crisis, the economic crisis that we are going through.

"

If the majority of social partners contest this reform, "the crisis we are going through does not erase the need to reform", responds this Tuesday Elisabeth Borne, according to which "the current system is not satisfactory".

However, the pension reform, strongly contested by the unions and suspended because of the health crisis, "is not the priority", recognizes the minister.
