In the coming days it will be decided whether Germany is facing a bad or a nice summer.
It has long been clear that the pandemic can only be effectively slowed down with the help of vaccinations.
But so far the vaccination start jerks and jerks considerably.
A return to at least approximately normalcy will only be possible if there is more vaccine that also protects the elderly in particular, exists against the new mutants and ultimately prevents or at least curbs the transmission of the virus.
The demands are overwhelming.
Three events, which are now almost simultaneously, will show whether they can be met:
On Friday, the European approval authority Ema will probably decide whether the much criticized vaccine candidate from the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca will be approved in the EU - and whether it will also protect the elderly.
The US corporation Johnson & Johnson is expected to announce on Monday next week whether its vaccine candidate is effective.
And Biontech / Pfizer will probably be able to assess at the end of the week whether the vaccine will not only prevent the outbreak of Covid-19, but also the transmission of the virus.
In the best case scenario, the AstraZeneca candidate will also be approved for risk groups, the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is 90 percent effective, and the Biontech vaccine will stop the transmission of the virus.
Then the chances are good that the corona crisis will be under control by summer.
