Pizza is considered (some would rightly say) to be one of the favorite foods in the world.

The combination of dough (thin or thick), tomato sauce and cheese is more than perfect.

Pizza as we know it today may have been born in medieval Italy, but historians believe that its roots go further, in the 6th century BC.

The Greeks rolled out dough and used it as a base for some of the dishes - the gyros for example.

The name pizza is derived from some explanations from the name Ona Piazza (square) Piato (plate).

There are also controversies over the origin of Italian pizza.

Some claim that she was born in the southern port city of Naples where the world's first pizzeria was established.

But the Neapolitans claiming the crown suffered a blow when one of the food historians claimed that the source of the pizza in general was in a small town in a province northwest of Naples.

The rolling of the dough was inherited by the Italians from the Roman Empire, but it was the Arabian pita that came with the Muslim occupation filled with every good that inspired the familiar dish - only the Italians placed the products on the dough and not inside it.

The dough raised in the air during the pizza preparation process spread in the Mediterranean basin.

In 2017 UNESCO declared the raising of dough in the air as an intangible cultural heritage.

The tomato sauce was added to the pizza at a later stage.

The tomato arrived in Europe in the early 16th century, when Europeans came to South America.

At first the Europeans believed that the tomato was toxic to humans, and later it became used among the poor in the Naples area, who were the first to add the tomatoes to the pizza and the tomato sauce became a success.

In 1700 they first started baking pizzas as they are known today.

Pizza was considered a popular food of the poor that the nobles did not eat.

In the 18th century, Maria Carolina, Queen of Naples, fell in love with pizza and asked them to install a special oven in which she baked pizzas that she served to her guests, a move that took root among Italian upper-class people who fell in love with Neapolitan pizza.

In 1830 the first pizzeria Antica Pizzeria Port Alba opened in Naples.

Towards the end of the 19th century, Umberto I, King of Italy, enjoyed explosives prepared by the palace chef Rafael Esposito, who is considered a leading pizza baker.

In 1889 his wife Queen Margarita of Sobia, who was staying in the Naples area, asked Esposito to make her a pizza and he made her a pizza from mozzarella cheese, basil and tomatoes that she particularly liked.

Esposito called the pizza "Pizza Margherita", named after the Queen, and the pizza became a national pizza thanks to the pizza colors that are identical to the colors of the Italian flag, red-tomato, white-cheese, green-basil.

In the late 19th century Italian immigrants brought pizza to America.

The immigrants opened cheap and satisfying pizzerias, and pizza became a leading street food.

The Americans combined the toppings and added a thick dough version baked in the pan hence the name Pan Pizza which made the pizza satisfying and inexpensive in keeping with the spirit of the time.

On its way to the world of pizza it has undergone adaptations to local cuisines, such as the Domino's Double Crust with cheese on the edges.

In 1905, Joe Lombardi opened the first pizzeria in New York, in 1945 they started making pizza on a pan.

In 1950 a number of pizza chains were opened in the USA, in 1957 the frozen pizza was invented, in the late 60s the square pizza boxes were invented.
