The government provided billions in support for Air Namibia, but could no longer maintain it because of other important issues such as economic growth and social benefits.
The government will pay an annual salary for the around 600 Air Namibia employees affected.
Schiimi told the dpa news agency that the company had not been profitable for years.
"Voluntary liquidation is the best way in the national interest."
