The winter still has Germany under control.
But it's not only icy outside: For many people, a heated apartment is not a matter of course.
This is shown by data from the Federal Statistical Office from last winter.
According to this, around two million people live in Germany who cannot adequately heat their apartment or house due to financial difficulties.
That corresponds to 2.5 percent of the population.
Single parents and their children often have to freeze: In 2019, seven percent of people in single-parent households lacked the money to heat properly.
Even those who live all alone in their apartment are affected more than average.
The situation has improved compared to previous years: In 2009, 5.5 percent of Germans said they could not heat properly because they did not have the money.
In other European countries, even more people are affected than in Germany.
In the European Union, the rate in 2019 was around 6.9 percent of the population.
This was most common among people in Bulgaria (30.1 percent), Lithuania (26.7 percent) and Cyprus (21.0 percent).
In Sweden, Austria and Finland the share was lowest at just under two percent.
