Everyone knows the unwritten rules of advancement: perform well, do an MBA and network diligently. All wrong, say two who should know. Here they debunk nine career myths.

If you want to develop professionally, you should plan your career and weave tightly and broadly the network of opportunities in which lucky coincidences can get caught.

But there are always beliefs in the way that can hinder your progress.

Here are the most dangerous nine.

1. Bosses are lousy, so are companies

Those lousy bosses in these lousy companies ...

With gossip and complaints, you signal that you have passed out and that you are lowering yourself.

And that's exactly where others will see you, powerless, spreading a bad mood, not suitable for any major tasks.

Develop a positive perspective on why you would like to work here and make an impact.

2. I want to stay authentic and honest

You are hardly ever authentic

; you naturally adapt to different roles.

The young father, who takes his daughter to daycare, looks after her a little dreamily and sentimentally, is just minutes later the number-oriented investment banker who is dominated by cool reason.

These role changes are not inauthentic, but rather social rituals.

You are selectively authentic.

Depending on the situation.

This goes without saying for you, it includes keeping your negative emotions to yourself and staying cheerful and in a good mood.

Take on your professional role in your job.

3. At some point I will be discovered

You have already achieved great successes for your company.

That is good, but good performance is the basis for your career, nothing more.

To be discovered, you need to know how to be discovered: by making influential people positive.

You need big words that you constantly communicate: "We need rapid development of hydrogen drives, and I am involved in this as an engineer."

How else would anyone recommend you?

Develop big, positive, engaging words for your inner concern.

4. I will never slime

The resistance to praise is numerous.

Isn't it an exaggeration?

Does it even mean anything to anyone?

Isn't it presumptuous?

I never get praise, and after all, that's not what we do.

Just forget about these concerns.

Praise for something that the recipient finds good in itself requires some thought, but is never considered too great.

Without praise there is no benevolence, no trust, not even for you.

Would you like your performance to be recognized?

Then appreciate the achievement of others.

Give recognition.

5. The company takes care of my career

HR managers have the task of finding the best solution for the company, which does not necessarily match their ambition.

This is how it happens

that someone is stuck in a position because he or she is the ideal person.

Internal personnel development strengthens you for the current job.

Career jumps are possible

through external conferences and seminars, later offline, now online.

This is

where you come up with ideas, make top-class contacts and are reflected in your success.

You gain the certainty: There is more to be done.

6. I don't need advice

Do you know?

Then you have bad cards.

They hardly see any new dangers, hardly any new opportunities.

"I already know" often means the end of a career.

Curiosity, amazement, questions, enthusiasm for the exploration of new knowledge are the ingredients for advancement.

Always.

7. I lack relationships

You come from a simple background - so what?

Well, you were not born into a castle where princesses, Nobel Prize winners, ministers and board members give each other the handle.

Neither are many highly gifted, skilled, future top managers who have great careers.

How do you manage it anyway?

You connect with others to form an influential community.

They adopt the top-league habitus, always appreciative and generous.

They support others and recognize their successes, celebrate and recommend others.

Learn how to create and maintain influential connections without a castle or nobility. 

8. A wrong decision ended my career forever

Careers are always interrupted by crises, by wrong decisions such as changing jobs for the sake of higher salaries, quitting because of an unbearable boss, toiling for an MBA instead of taking on an interesting international task.

If you recognize your mistakes, you can get back on the path of ambition: What tasks are I really looking for and fulfilling?

What do I want to bring into the world?

Only that is communicated.

With each experience you learn more about what is driving you right now.

9. A career also requires luck

Anyone who speaks of happiness does not know the dynamics of great careers.

“Then I was just lucky and sat next to the future CEO” - if you looked closely, thousands were already sitting next to something in the future and couldn't use it.

Whoever you sit next to, win them over: admire their successes, compliment them, speak in big words about your own concerns and ambitions.

Then write a card about how inspiring this conversation was.

We call this strategy, the opposite of luck.
