Like other global hotel giants, Accor blamed the Covid-19 crisis.
Closure of borders, travel restrictions and other containment measures have dried up the flow of leisure and business customers.
The rebound observed last summer was not enough to save 2020, the worst year ever for the hospitality industry.
From Marriott to Hyatt via Hilton and Accor, activity has plummeted by more than 50%.
It had never fallen more than 25% during previous crises, in 2001 after the terrorist attacks in New York and in 2008 during the financial crisis.

As a result, Accor's accounts turned red.
The French hospitality giant suffered a loss of 2 billion euros in 2020, including nearly 1 billion of depreciation of assets.
Turnover collapsed to 1.6 billion from 4 billion in 2019. Revenue per available room (RevPar), the key indicator of the hotel industry, fell by 62%.
